Sreedevi Yadlapati
Kuchipudi Artist • Guru • Choreographer • Director

Guru Smt. Sreedevi Yadlapati is an accomplished and versatile Kuchipudi dancer, teacher, choreographer, director, and mentor with a lifelong dedication to the preservation and advancement of Indian classical dance. Her journey began in India at a very young age and has continued for decades, inspiring generations of students in the United States and beyond.
A Journey Rooted in Tradition
Guru Sreedevi began learning Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam at the age of five. Her Kuchipudi training began under the guidance of the renowned Guru Kalaratna Bhagavathula Venkata Rama Sarma in Vijayawada, India, under whose tutelage she completed her Rangapravesam at the age of 11. She continued her advanced training under distinguished masters, including Guru Kalaratna Smt. A.B. Bala Kondala Rao and legendary Kuchipudi exponent Padmabhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. She further pursued her studies at renowned institutions dedicated to Indian classical dance. By the age of 19, Guru Sreedevi had completed her diplomas in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam from Telugu University. Her passion for choreography emerged remarkably early, with her first choreography created when she was only 10 years old.
She later earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English Literature, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Nursing, and went on to complete her Master’s degree in Kuchipudi. Her extensive academic education complements her decades of rigorous training, performance, choreography, and teaching experience in Indian classical dance.
A Story of Resilience
Guru Sreedevi’s journey is one of extraordinary determination and perseverance. At the age of 21, she underwent patellofemoral replacement surgery on both knees and was told that she might never be able to dance again. Refusing to allow this challenge to define her future, she continued to pursue the art that had been an integral part of her life since childhood. With remarkable determination, she returned to dancing and continued her artistic journey.
A Distinguished Performing Artist
Guru Sreedevi has enjoyed a remarkable career as a performing artist and choreographer, appearing in numerous recitals, cultural programs, and dance festivals in India and the United States. Her work in performance, direction, and choreography has earned her numerous accolades and recognition, including awards from various state governments in India. Among the most cherished moments of her artistic journey were the opportunities to perform before Sri Sathya Sai Baba and Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati. Her artistry extends beyond performance. As a choreographer, she has created numerous dance productions and Kuchipudi ballets, combining traditional technique with expressive storytelling to bring Indian classical dance to audiences of all generations.
Founder of Sai Nritya Academy
In 2000, Guru Sreedevi Yadlapati founded Sai Nritya Academy, with the vision of preserving and nurturing India’s rich classical dance traditions among younger generations. Originally established in Houston, the academy relocated to Dallas in 2011 and has since grown into a vibrant Kuchipudi community in the DFW Metroplex. Through Sai Nritya Academy, Guru Sreedevi has choreographed and presented numerous performances and Kuchipudi ballets, providing students with opportunities to experience the art form both on stage and beyond the classroom.
Nurturing the Next Generation
For Guru Sreedevi, teaching Kuchipudi goes far beyond learning steps and movements. She believes in developing well-rounded dancers who understand the tradition, discipline, expression, storytelling, and cultural heritage behind the art form. She provides her students with opportunities to participate in competitions, recitals, cultural performances, and stage productions, allowing them to build confidence, develop performance experience, and challenge themselves as artists. Guru Sreedevi also guides and prepares dedicated students who wish to pursue formal Kuchipudi certifications and diplomas. Through recognized cultural organizations and programs, including opportunities associated with TANA Kalasala and SAMPADA, students are supported in working toward certifications and diplomas that recognize their training and accomplishments in Kuchipudi. She is committed to helping each student progress at their own pace while encouraging them to pursue excellence and take pride in their cultural heritage.
